Going Green?

Here’s me (in my best consultant’s suit) showing off my new corded electrical mower:

Took it for it’s first spin on Saturday. I really like the fact that it’s reasonably quiet, starts every time and is strong enough to do our lawn. There’s a bit of cord management to move it around to cover our whole 750 square meters but I suspect I’ll get used to it. Best of all there’s no smell and no smoke.

Next step is to invest in solar panels on the roof which would make this a zero emissions solution.

What’s this go to do with IT ? Well, unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the last couple of years, there’s a lot of talk about green IT. You know, using virtualization for server consolidation to save on power and cooling costs or using core parking in Windows Server 2008 R2 or any other technology touted as “green”. I recently read an interesting article which just goes to show that it pays to look beyond the marketing hype and vendor claims to really see how to do green IT right. http://redmondmag.com/articles/2010/07/22/green-it-is-greener-always-better.aspx.
